Virtual Meeting on November 15, 2020
St. Matthew Trinity held a virtual Music Miniistry Town Hall on November 15 to discuss the future of music at SMT.
Music accesses and expresses deep feelings far more powerfully than words alone. If we experience worship as boring, that feeling is most likely to come from a deficit in either the sermon or the music. We are thankful to have a pastor who excels in giving sermons. And, at the same time, we are devastated to have lost our fabulous music minister, Richard Brode. Now, we need to figure out where to go from here.
It is extremely important that we know what we want when we search for and call a new music minister. To that end, we will hold a “town hall” style in-person and Zoom meeting after church on November 15, so everyone who wants to will have a voice in shaping the future of music at SMT.
Think of the high points in your church year such as on Christmas Eve and Easter Sunday. Music may well be the first thing that comes to mind. What brings you closer to God? Chances are that the kind of music you hear and are asked to sing is integral to your feelings.
Music is something we both hear and sing when we worship. This is related to the fact that worship is both call and response. The call of God reaches the depths of our hearts with special power through music, and our singing expresses with special power the deepest response of our hearts to God.
Our Beloved Music Minister
Words cannot describe the shock of the passing of our beloved Richard on September 25th after he was tragically hit by a SUV in Times Square. His music soared through the St. Matthew Trinity sanctuary for nearly 20 years. No one who saw or heard him play will forget how he pounced on keys, pushed and pulled valves, and leapt on the pedals of the original 1877 Jardine Organ in the loft creating an awe-inspiring sound ever since he had become music minister in 2001.
We plan on holding a celebration of Richard’s life full of music in about a year after COVID-19 is hopefully under control and we can all gather easier. In remembrance of Richard’s life, any charitable donations may be made to the St. Matthew Trinity “Music Ministry” fund:

Richard had a deep appreciation and love for St. Matthew Trinity and it was obvious how much he enjoyed playing. We all loved him too, and he will be missed.
